My Top 5 Hair Products

My top 5 favorite hair products!

As a hairstylist, I'm always playing around with different products and trying out new things. These are my top 5 favorite products of all time that I can't go without. I understand that salon products can be expensive. However, when clients ask me "What should I spend my money on that will really improve my hair?",  These are my top 5 that I show them and that I believe are worth every penny.

1- Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner.
I can't get enough of this duo. As a hairstylist, I'm using all sorts of different shampoo's & conditioners on my clients. And yes, some do work better for others. However this dynamic duo is incredible. I truly feel a difference in the hair after ONE use and so do my clients. Every time I'm washing my clients out, they always say "Whatever you're using smells incredible!". The best part is this products contains Tea Tree Oil in it. So you can feel the tingly sensation on your head as it helps hydrate and condition. It's pure heaven!

2- Loreal Professional Next Day Hair.
Hello perfect texture! This product I use on every single client. I love this product because it really does add the right texture to the hair and looks great whether you wear your hair straight, wavy, curly, or air dried! It doesn't leave a sticky residue because it's a dry formula, meaning when your spray it into the hair, it's not wet. It feels like nothing and that's honestly the best part!

3- Bed Head After Party
This product has been around for a while and there is a reason why. This is a smoothing product. It's basically lotion for your hair and smooths down all those baby hairs and split ends that no one wants to see. Plus it smells amazing so who doesn't like that. I love this product for those days that I air dry my hair because it makes my hair look a little more sleek and shiny vs dry and messy.

4- coconut oil
Coconut oil is amazing for just about anything you can think of. I especially love it for hair. It's hydrating and all natural. It's perfect for deep conditioners. Especially when trying to nurse your hair back to health from previous chemical services or if your hair is really dry. The best part is you can buy it anywhere. (:

5- Bed Bead Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo
Everyone needs a dry shampoo in their lives. If you're one of those who wash your hair everyday, stop! Dry shampoo will be your new BFF. I love this one in particular because the smell is Devine, and it dries matte!! I hate dry shampoos that leave that powder residue. By far one of the best out on the market. Every client that buys this is literally obsessed!

If you're wondering where you can pick up these products, Ulta Beauty carries all of them (except coconut oil). I would highly recommend just trying one out! If you have any questions about any products, please contact me! You can leave a comment on our Instagram, our Facebook page, or even email us!

Balayage (hand painting)

Today I'm going to be talking about my favorite hair coloring techniques! I'm super excited to share with you guys my passion for hair and the creativity that goes behind the chair (that rhymed).
So the first thing you need to know is that balayage is a french word for "sweep" or "to paint". It allows a sun-kissed, natural look or a bold, dramatic look. It will also help create a soft, less noticeable regrowth line.
I love using this technique because there are endless possibilities. With creativity, I'm able to achieve any look my client or I desire. I love how natural it can look or how bold it can be. I love recommending balayage to clients who want to keep their natural root but brighten up their ends. I also do root re-touches for my blondes. IF my client needs grey coverage, I will use foils because I feel more comfortable and safe when applying the paint in between the foils to cover the grey that the foil didn't get (this makes more sense if you talk hair). If you're looking to try something different, I would highly suggest talking with your stylist and getting their opinion to see what is best for your hair.

These 2 photos above aren't the best quality pictures, but it was all I had on my camera roll to show how I apply my balayage. Picture left, is a deep V. This will create a very deep root effect with tiny subtle highlights here and there. Picture right, is a deep V with a highlight going right down the center. This will create more baby lights and brightness on top. I'll even get more adventurous and add a highlight on each side of the middle highlight (: I absolutely love alternating both techniques in 1 color.

This first picture is an example of alternating the two different techniques.

This is an example of doing the deep V technique. Keeping her roots very dark, yet dimensional.

Same with this client. Deep roots, but dimensional on bottom.

This is an example of painting multiple highlights. this technique replaces foils, but also keeps her natural base for dimension.

This is an example of saturating most of the ends while painting highlights to help soften. This is good for someone who doesn't want to deal with the upkeep it takes to be blonde.

This is more of an ombre look but was done using all different highs and lows up painting. This is an example of bold balayage.

This is an example of low maintenance balayage. A sun-kissed effect with brighter blondes here and there.

This client was tired of being platinum and all the up keep that goes with it. So we brought down her natural base and kept some highlights so she wouldn't feel too dark.

This is what we call "bronde" hair color. It's in between blonde and brown and is very natural.

This was a root re-touch using the painting technique.

This one as well. The grow out is extremely soft and very natural.

This is an example of sun-kissed balayage. She's very dimensional, yet her highlights are very close to her matching color.

This is another example of sun-kissed balayage except a warmer version. Notice how her roots are deep and the highlights don't go all the way up.

This is a baby-lights technique. I weaved out multiple hairs and painted them with lightener.

Very bold, heavy balayage. I did this just so her purple color would POP!

One of my favs. Deep roots for depth and dimensional balayage.

Heavy balayage all over. She's currently in the process of going white with her natural base!

Heavy, thick balayage keeping her natural base.

Sorry for all the pictures! I just wanted you all to see the many different outcomes of using balayage.

Casual With A Little Edge.

Lately, I have been loving comfortable T-shirts! They are so dang easy to work with whether I'm wanting something super casual, or something a little more done up. This time of year I always go towards more edgier styles. It's probably because we say goodbye to all the bright summer colors and welcome the olive greens, plums, and my personal favorite, black. Edge is fun because you feel a little more bold and sexy. I don't know what it is about wearing all black, but I'm most confident in it (who am I kidding, we all know its the most slimming color.) With this particular outfit, all I'm wearing is skinny jeans and a t-shirt and the black booties and floppy hat were added to help make this outfit a bit dressier and edgier.

Hat: ALDO || T-Shirt: TARGET || Skinny Jeans: PACSUN || Booties: H&M (old, similar HERE) ||  Watch: NIXON  || Bangle: Forever 21 (similar HERE)

Sorry for all the photos! My hubby did a pretty great job! (: I hope you enjoyed this look and make sure to check out the links!

Hair Tips 101.

As a hairstylist, I'm frequently asked if there is anything specific I do to make my hair long, shiny, smooth, texturized, healthy, etc. I can honestly say there are a number of things that I do that PERSONALLY work for me. Also, I'll list some facts I know that need to be shared so everyone can be more educated on hair. I hope you benefit from this post and find some helpful tips that will change the way you treat your hair.

HAIR TIPS

  • DO NOT wash your hair with scolding hot water! I know that there is nothing better than a nice, relaxing, steamy, warm shower but when it comes to shampooing and conditioning, turn the water level down to a more cool temperature when rinsing the product out. Hot water can dry out your hair, making it feel almost brittle and weak. With dryness comes dulness, making your hair not as shiny. Also, a dry scalp will cause dandruff and we all know how attractive white flakes are... not!!
  • Shampoo is not meant for your whole head of hair. You only need a little amount to get in the roots and mid shaft (middle of your hair strand.) When you rinse the shampoo out, the water will make the product slide through your ends and out. Placing shampoo on your ends will only dry your hair out more.
  • Conditioner was made for the ends of your hair!! If you have dry hair, than a hydrating conditioner will be your BFF. You can also give your hair a nice little treatment while your at it by LEAVING the conditioner in your hair for about 5-15 mins. If you have enough time then leave it in for 30-60 minutes. Go big or go home! Conditioner is what will help you with that shine and smoothness that you're looking for.
  • If you suffer with oily hair, then conditioning your hair can be tricky. Don't have the product touch your roots because if you do, it's pretty much game over right there ha. Make sure your shampoo is COMPLETELY rinsed out. Stay away from products that are creamy or oily.
  • If you suffer from dry hair, oils are great! Hydrating shampoos and conditioners are my most favorite things to use for my dry hair clients.
  • INVEST in good products! I know we all wish that money grew on trees and I understand that expensive products can be so frustrating, but the reason why some products are so pricey are from the ingredients in the products. Quality is everything! I'm not saying that all store bought products suck because they definitely don't, but if you can splurge on that conditioner, or texture spray, or heat protectant, your hair will thank you for it!
  • BLONDES: Educate yourself with your hair! Keep up on your toners. Typically toners last for about 4 weeks if using good products. When you notice your hair turning a little yellow and brassy, it's time to make an appointment. ASK YOUR STYLIST what you can do to help make your tones last longer. There are some great at home products out there that will help you keep your color fresh and looking great.
  • Stay up to date on your trims. Hair grows about 1/2 inch per month. So keep in mind that your ends need to be freshened up every 8 weeks. If your ends are transparent, then you're way overdue.
  • DO NOT over curl or straighten your hair. Think about it, your straightener is set for 350 degrees and going over your already straightened hair 3+ times is just giving your hair more damage and heat that it does not need. Also, USE a heat protectant!
  • DO NOT brush your hair when it's wet unless you have the right brush for it. Your hair is at its most vulnerable stage when wet so when you brush it, it can stretch causing it to break. If you need to brush your hair then look into the WetBrush. It's amazing and your hair will love you for it!
  • Diet can play a HUGE part in your hair. Well... lets be real, diet basically plays a huge part in everything! With hair, it can help with growth, shine, and many other beneficial things. Study certain foods and the nutrients they provide. It will reveal a whole new world to you and answer a lot of questions you might have.
  • Don't be afraid to ask your stylist questions about your hair! It's their job to keep you updated on what you need, what you're doing wrong, and what will be best for you personally. Educating yourself will only help you more so that you're completely aware of how your hair works.
So those are just a few of my tips for now (I have plenty more :).) If you have any more specific questions, whether it be with hair styling, cutting, color, or health, I'm here to help! Just leave a comment below!

Sun of a Beach Wave.

Curling Wand: 18-25mm
This wand can create the perfect beach wave. I seriously wrap a piece of my hair around it, hold for a few seconds (literally a few seconds) and immediately run my fingers through it after I let it go. It's super easy and messy and I absolutely adore the turn out.

Kick It Up A Notch.

I'm one of those people who just LOVES the color black. It's an obsession of mine and in my opinion you can never have enough black in your closet. However it's important for me to accent my clothes with color, mainly jewelry, makeup, and styling my hair to take it to that next level. I absolutely love using my infra-shine straightener to achieve these curls. You can get that HERE! And of course I can't live without my Sea Salt Spray by TIGI in the catwalk series. It gives my hair the perfect texture  for curls. You can get that product HERE.
As for my makeup, I don't like to go overboard with color, but pops of it really brighten up my look.
And with spring and summer being right around the corner, don't be afraid to use a color that you maybe wouldn't wear everyday! It's the time of year to get away with it!
For my makeup I've been using my MAC warm/neutral palette. It has all my favorite transition shades, shimmer shades, and matte shades as well. It's been my go-to since the moment I purchased it. You can not purchase this online however there is a similar palette that I own and love called the Chocolate Bar palette by TooFaced cosmetics and it has a lot of the same shades as the Mac palette. Plus it's cheaper, bonus right!? You can check it out HERE!

Like I said, I love to accent my wardrobe with jewelry! And with the color black you literally can get away with anything. I have been loving the chunky necklaces and how they can dress up the most simple t-shirt. I also love a necklace that is going to turn heads, and is more unique than the average Joe. I get so many compliments on this necklace. I got this beauty at H&M however, it is currently  not on their website but I still see it in stores! I found a necklace that isn't identical but it's bold. It definitely makes a statement and can go with anything!
Take a look HERE!
